The Elkhorn fire has burned an estimated 24,000 acres since its start on July 24, 2023, and continues to smolder as cooler weather and rain help to slow the fire according to the Idaho Department of Lands.

Crews are expecting fire activity to continue on the steep slopes along the Salmon River Corridor and possibly on along Benjamin Creek due to some prevailing winds. Fire crews are expecting minimal growth as cooler weather moves through the area over the next few days.

Rafters are required to stop at river mile 26.1, Hancock Campsite, for more information on passing through the fire zone area.

Camping is now allowed in the area though campers and rafters need to look out for hazards from the fire such as logs, debris, falling rocks, snags, holes, and an increased risk of flash flooding.

Rafters also need to look out for jetboats that are transporting fire personnel and equipment and move out of their way as much as possible.
